Visas Information System (VIS) at the French Embassy in Doha (Qatar)
1) What is VIS ?
VIS is an exchange of visa data between the Schengen States.
The main purposes of VIS is to facilitate the issuance of visas and the checks at the borders as well as enhancing security.
VIS presents the biographic and biometric data (10 fingerprints and a digital photograph) of visa applicants.
2) The visa applicants have to come to the visa section of the Embassy in order to have their fingerprints and photograph taken.
Once finger scans are stored in VIS, they can be re-used for further visa applications over a 5-year period, except when the identity of the visa applicant has to be specifically checked.
Upon the arrival of the visa holder at the Schengen Areas external borders, the border authorities have access to the VIS in order to check his/her identity and the authenticity of the visa.
Children under 12 and people physically unable to provide finger scans.
